Southern Utah University Type of School: Public four-year university |
||
Without the success of hazardous 1898 dead-of-winter expeditions to haul lumber from the mountains east of Cedar City, today's Southern Utah University might not even exist.
However, through these and other extraordinary efforts of what was then a rural community of under 1,500 citizens, the lumber was obtained, and the university's first building was completed in time to meet a state mandated deadline. Completion of that building ensured the renewal of a state commitment to the fledgling one-year-old school.
Today's SUU is a vibrant, growing institution which has drawn attention through its hosting of the popular Utah Shakespearean Festival and the appealing Utah Summer Games.
Now a comprehensive regional university with over 6,000 students, SUU offers associate's, bachelor's, and master's degrees through five academic colleges: Business, Technology and Communication; Education; Humanities and Social Sciences; Performing and Visual Arts; and Science.
A full student activity program includes a successful and growing NCAA Division I men's and women's athletics program and a myriad of clubs and organizations.
