Surface + Strata - An exhibition featuring two female artists.
Dec 20 - Dec 20
Gallery MAR presents a new exhibition featuring two very talented female artists, both inspired by interwoven textures, layered prints, and the colors of the west. The dominant theme of Maura Allen’s work is life and landscape of the American West. The mythology of the West -- solitude, strength, discipline, individualism, pride and promise -- provide a source of imagery and inspiration. To create her work, Allen draws on more than 20 years experience in black and white photography. Like a journalist, she photographs in order to capture moments and elements that portray current day life. Using the serigraph (silkscreen) printmaking process, Allen is able to stretch beyond the photographic media and work on a variety surfaces, layer images and incorporate color and create rich textures. For mixed media artist Nina Tichava, her paintings are explorations of color, surface, texture, pattern and media. Her works are best described as abstract botanicals with architectural and decorative references, as they suggest natural forms, man-made structures, and patterns both natural and fabricated. Rather than attempting to make the viewer aware of any “grand design” or narrative picture, Tichava’s focus instead is the complex subtleties of detail and transient moments; her paintings are the romantic, emotional and imperfect reproductions of the “things” that make up daily life. Both artists will be in attendance for the reception.
