Auto Touring Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon: Mossy Cave

Some of the majestic scenery of Bryce Canyon Park can be viewed from scenic Hwy. 12; the main park viewpoints are located along Hwy 63, which runs along the rim of the Bryce amphitheater.

It is recommended that visitors begin their auto tour at the very southern end of the park first. Here at Rainbow Point the beautiful park stretches out before you. From here you can stop at the 15 viewpoints as you travel back north; but before heading back, be sure to stop by the southern overlook Yovimpa Point, where you can get a good view of the Grand Staircase.

You can drive to the viewpoints along Hwy 63, or you can park at the Visitor Center and ride the new park shuttle. The shuttle is convenient and helps ease congestion in the park, as well as make the roads safer for visitors.

  • Bryce Point - This is one of the most scenic panoramic views of the full amphitheater.
  • Sunrise Point - This beautiful outlook allows you to view Boat Mesa and the Sinking Ship against the sharp Pink Cliffs.
  • Sunset Point - Here you'll find some of the most famous and breathtaking of Bryce Canyon's hoodoos. Silent City, a tight formation of hoodoos, and Thor's Hammer, a striking form as it stands alone away from other hoodoos, are two favorites to view from Sunset viewpoint.
  • Inspiration Point - Anyone who looks out over this viewpoint is sure to be inspired. From this three-level viewpoint, visitors can view the Silent City (near Sunset Point), and Boat Mesa, along with other beautiful formations.

Hwy 12 cuts through the NE portion of the park and is very scenic. One pullout in particular allows visitors to stroll up the easy Mossy Cave Trail to get close to hoodoos set against a lush green forest. Located up the left fork of the trail is Mossy Cave itself. This is a spectacular rock overhang fed by an underground spring. In summer the cave is cool, with water dripping from hanging gardens. During winter the cave is filled with giant icicles.

Near Mossy Cave you will also find a waterfall, which lies just off the right fork of the trail. The waterfall is beautiful and can be reached via a quick and easy walk. There is also a scenic arch up near the top of a redrock formation.
