Jackson (Gateway City)
The city of Jackson is located just south of Grand Teton National Park. Jackson is a vibrant resort community offering all visitor services including great shops and boutiques, restaurants, bars and lodging facilities.
Jackson is a year-round destination in its own right. During the summer it is an important gateway to nearby Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks. During winter it attracts people coming to ski at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King and Grand Targhee.
The community is located in Jackson Hole, which is encompassed on all sides by mountains. The Jackson Hole valley is 48 miles long and about six to eight miles wide. The valley lies a few miles west of the Continental Divide. The mighty Snake River heads in the surrounding mountains.
The historic town square area is framed by an arch of tangled elk antlers at each corner. The old part of town has a distinctive Old West flare. Many buildings sport frontier-style architecture. Boardwalks run between some buildings. The area is a hub for artists, with many galleries that feature a wide assortment of paintings, sculpture and crafted items.
