Yellowstone Area Information
Most of Yellowstone National Park is located in northwestern Wyoming; small portions spill over into Idaho and Montana. The closest city with a major airport is Salt Lake City, Utah. All major US airlines provide service to Salt Lake. From there you can rent a car or join a tour group to travel to Yellowstone.
Nearby regional airports with limited services are located in Jackson, WY, West Yellowstone, MT, Cody, WY, Bozeman, MT, Idaho Falls, ID, and Billings, MT. These cities also offer vehicle rentals.
Yellowstone is located immediately north of Grand Teton National Park. Many travelers visit both parks during one trip.
Most roads in Yellowstone are not plowed. During the winter they are not passable to wheeled vehicles because of heavy snow. Some parts of the park are open to travel using snowmobiles and other snow machines. The road between Gardiner, Mammoth Hot Springs, and the Northeast Entrance/Cooke City is plowed and kept open year-round.
The community of Jackson, WY, south of Yellowstone near Grand Teton National Park, is a popular resort town and cultural center for all things related to the Old West/cowboy lifestyle.
