Vibrant fall colors are now on display in northern Utah — trees and bushes are wearing cheery reds, oranges and yellows. I drove the Alpine Loop around Mt. Timpanogos the other day and I've never seen the colors show more variety and intensity.
Colors are now approaching their peak at higher elevations in northern Utah — the next two weeks will be most impressive. The colors will move to lower elevations and more southerly longitudes in October, and linger into November in the St. George area.
Many people think the Alpine Loop offers the best fall colors in the state. The Nebo Loop is comparable. But, in my mind, nothing is more beautiful than the red-rock canyons around Bryce and Capitol Reef, when Mother Nature paints the cottonwoods golden and the riparian brush scarlet and brown.
Click here for descriptions of recommended fall color driving tours, in every part of the state.
Mountain biking is a great way to see the fall colors. On a bike you can get into the backcountry where scenery is amazing. There are excellent mountain bike trails at all of our ski resorts, and in many other locations.
We're now moving into Indian Summer, which is an ideal time to hike and bike in our national parks and desert areas. October is a prime month to ride the desert trails around Moab.
Escalante Canyons Everett Ruess Days
This interesting event will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 2 in Escalante. It will honor the life and art of Everett Ruess, a teenage vagabond who used these words to describe his life in the wilderness: "I am drunk with the fiery elixir of beauty. I have seen almost more beauty than I can bear."
Ruess wandered the West alone, occasionally surfacing to discuss art with the likes of painter Maynard Dixon and well-known photographers Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Dorothea Lange. Then, in November 1934, at the age of 20, Ruess disappeared from the canyon country near Escalante; he was never seen again. Although his burros were found near his camp, his fate remains a mystery. He left behind a remarkable collection of letters, essays, poems, drawings and paintings. This year marks the 70th anniversary of his disappearance. The event in his honor is a "Working Arts Festival" designed to encourage all to respond in whatever medium they choose; seeing the area with new eyes.
Deer Valley Resort Wins Accolades
Deer Valley Resort is ranked as the #2 resort in North America by readers of SKI magazine - the seventh consecutive year the resort has placed in the top three. (Deer Valley was given the #1 rating in 2001.) The rankings were announced after more than 20,000 SKI readers were surveyed by an independent research firm. In individual categories, Deer Valley ranked #1 for grooming, service and on-mountain food, and #2 for lodging and dining. Vail took top honors; Park City Mountain Resort was ranked #8.
Ski season is just around the corner and bookings are already coming in fast. You should book now if you hope to get accommodations at or close to the resorts.
