Utah Travel Tips

Snowmobile the Greatest Snow on Earth

Utah is ski country - we're famous for our deep powder. But the snow doesn't stop at the resort boundaries. It falls all through our forests and along our mountain ridges, creating great opportunity for a wide variety of winter recreation activities.

Snowmobilers in particular enjoy the snow while also enjoying the great diversity of scenery to be found here. With over 1,200 miles of groomed trails, from the red rock canyons of southern Utah to the rugged mountains in the northern reaches of the state, Utah offers plenty of snowmobiling options. From ridges overlooking Zion National Park to the shorelines of Bear Lake, the trails and play areas seem to extend forever.

Snowmobiles are generally not allowed to operate within Utah's National Parks. However, excellent trails on nearby mountains provide views into some parks. For example, the East Fork Trail provides views out over Bryce Canyon and the Strawberry Point Trail has outstanding views into Zion Park. Nearby, the Cedar Breaks Trail provides access to vistas overlooking that scenic national monument.

Utah's most popular trails are located near Salt Lake City. The Strawberry, Mill Hollow and Mirror Lake trail systems interconnect to offer extensive play areas joined by well-groomed trails, just a short drive from downtown.

The Daniels Loop Trail is my personal favorite. From Daniels Summit Lodge on Highway 40, the trail runs through the forest along Strawberry Ridge and then drops down toward Strawberry Reservoir, offering great views at every turn.

From Daniels Summit, riders have direct access to some 200 miles of groomed trail and countless bowls, hills and other play areas. The main trail is an easy ride, ideal for families. Some spurs in the area disappear into deep powder, others climb ridgelines that challenge advanced riders. Contact Daniels Summit Lodge for more information on this area.

Snowmobile conditions are perfect right now - the next few weeks will provide the best riding opportunities of the year. If you are coming to ski, consider taking a day off for snowmobile adventure. If you aren't a skier, come spend several days exploring the best sled trails on earth.
