Lake Powell Offers Sunshine, Sand, Warm Water

Right now is a great time to visit Lake Powell. Early fall is always nice at the lake. This year the lake is particularly attractive for a number of reasons:
  - The lake is not crowded
  - The water level is up
  - Businesses are offering discounts and specials
  - Fishing has never been better

I visited Lake Powell over Labor Day weekend and was surprised to find the lake uncrowded. The final holiday of summer usually brings scores of people to the big lake. But visitation has been low this season because of high gas prices.

Now, gas prices have dropped and will probably fall further. And businesses are offering deals to make Lake Powell vacations more affordable. Check out the hot deals offered by Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas.

Early fall has always been my favorite time to hit Powell. I like this season because:
  - The weather's warm but not unbearably hot
  - The air temperature climbs into the upper 80s or low 90s most days
  - The weather is usually dry and stable
  - The water is still warm - it is still very enjoyable to ski and tube and engage in other water sports
  - Crowds are always down in the fall
  - Fishing improves as the water starts to cool

Conditions are ideal right now for all kinds of activities. This is the time of year to camp at the lake. Summer nights can be sweltering, driving people into air-conditioned motel rooms and houseboats. But nights are cooling off now and so it is easy to sleep.

There are some great hikes in the Lake Powell area and this is the ideal season to enjoy them. Some, like Davis Gulch and West Canyon, start right from the lake - you boat to the back of a canyon and then start hiking. Trailheads for others are just a short drive from the marinas.

Powell is one of my favorite playgrounds - I usually get down there 2-3 times a year. I love to explore the lake's side canyons and I've now boated into almost all of them. The remote San Juan arm is the only portion of the lake where I haven't spent much time, and I hope to remedy that next weekend. I've heard reports of exceptional fishing in that area and so I'm planning an excursion.

Why don't you join me...
