Tour of Utah Bike Race

The 2009 Larry H Miller Tour of Utah bicycle race will take place Aug 18-25, in and around Salt Lake City. It brings a chance to see some of America's best pro bike racers in fierce competition in some of the most scenic spots in northern Utah.

The 6-day event is billed as America's toughest stage race, with more climbing than any similar race in the US. It covers 325 miles as it winds past Utah ski resorts, picturesque communities and high mountain passes.

The route was designed to be challenging. It was also designed to provide ample opportunity for spectators to witness the action. The course follows public roads where travel will be restricted during race events. At other times, anyone is welcome to ride all or parts of the race route.

Several activities for amateur riders are included among the formal race events. In fact, amateurs will be able to ride one of the toughest stages, running from Park City through Heber Valley, past Sundance Ski Resort and then up to Alta Ski Resort.

Several of America's top men's Pro/1 cycling teams will compete in the NRC race, which offers a $45,000 purse. Favorite son David Zabriskie of Salt Lake City will be riding. He is a Tour de France stage winner, yellow jersey wearer and multi-time U.S. National Champion. Former Tour de France winner Floyd Landis will also compete.

Race updates will be given every 20 minutes on ESPN Radio 1280, and every hour on KFAN 1320 am.

The race prologue begins at 6 pm on Aug 18 at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. The gentle 4.5 mile route extends across City Creek Canyon and up into the High Avenue's neighborhood. The prologue will be presented by the Salt Lake Visitors and Convention Bureau.

The race will end on Aug 23 at the Salt Lake City & County Building and Public Library in downtown Salt Lake City, with the pro event beginning at 2 pm. It is expected to end about 3:30 pm. To warm up the course and the crowds, amateurs will race around the square in the Tour of Utah Downtown Amateur Criterium, beginning at 8:30 am.
