It's spring in Utah. In northern Utah, daffodils are blooming and tulips will soon follow. In our southern deserts, wildflowers have pushed through the sand and various kinds of cacti will soon be in bloom. This is a beautiful time to visit Utah.
There is still considerable snow in our high mountain areas, or course. All of our ski resorts will be open through Easter weekend and some will operate lifts well into May. Spring skiing conditions are very good. There's also plenty of snow for serious snowmobile adventures on the extensive trail systems that run throughout Utah's high country.
Me, I'm tired of snow. I'm ready for serious sunshine as I chase adventure in our desert canyons. Spring is the ideal season for many kinds of outdoor activities. It is also the time to lock in your summer plans.
Now's the time to book summer adventures! If you haven't made reservations yet, do it today because spots are going fast. You need to act now if you want things like:
All guided trips (sight seeing, hiking, canyoneering, fishing, hunting, etc) should be booked now.
Many businesses have lowered prices or are offering other incentives this year - there are deals to be had.
ATV Adventures
Bear River Lodge is offering a 2-for-1 deal on ATV and snowmobile rentals, and also 2 nights for the price of one on cabin lodging. See their ad above.
Bear River Lodge is located on the edge of the Uinta Mountains and it makes a great base camp for all kinds of adventure activities. From the lodge you have easy access to some 400 miles of ATV trails - scenic trails that climb to elevations of up to 11,000 feet. The mountains around the lodge offer dozens of lakes and streams, along with a wide assortment of wildlife including elk, deer, and moose.
The Bear River area is very popular for snowmobiling in the winter and ATV adventures in the summer. The lodge rents machines for both sports, new and in excellent condition, the best equipment for a great value. The lodge also has a new pool and hot tub to help you relax after the ride, and three new luxury cabins that will sleep up to 25 people.
Whitewater Rafting
Whitewater rafting conditions will be very good this season. Snowfall was abundant through the winter, and it is still piling up in mountain areas, so there will be plenty of water to give rafters thrilling rides. Late May and early June will offer the highest water - prime time for adrenaline junkies.
After that, the rivers will settle back to normal flows. People interested in rafting trips will find a wide range of options, from relaxing flatwater to moderate (Classs II and III) and intense (Classes IV and V) rapids.
The Colorado River in the Grand Canyon offers perhaps the ultimate whitewater experience. Grand Canyon trips are very popular and fill up fast, but there may still be some openings on some trips if you book now. Guide companies offer a range of trip lengths and intensities, to satisfy virtually every potential customer.
Cataract Canyon, on the Colorado below Moab, also offers an intense experience that is very popular. Several guide companies we work with still have openings for trips there.
Canyon Hiking
Right now is the ideal time to hike or backpack the dry trails in southern Utah's canyon country. Conditions are perfect for hikes in our national parks, and also for epic treks into places like Dark Canyon, Coyote Gulch and Grand Gulch.
I recently returned from an early-season backpack trip into Grand Gulch. See my report here.
Utah.com has created and is marketing a map specifically designed to help people take driving trips in our national park country. The map is the best resource available if you are planning trips to any of the parks in the Grand Circle area of southern Utah, northern Arizona, western Colorado and eastern Nevada.
