Fall For Lake Powell
Lake Powell is famous as a summer destination, perfect for boating, water skiing, wake boarding, fishing and other water sports. Right now is a great time for a houseboat vacation at the big reservoir. The water temperature is an inviting 80s (F) – just right for water sports.
I know conditions are prime because I just returned from a family trip to the lake and we had a great time. I'm a serious fisherman and striped bass fishing is raging right now. Big fish are feeding on the surface and aggressively hit lures. We also skied and pulled kids on tubs. It was great fun.
I go to Powell 2-3 times a year and I've been there in every season, so I know the fun doesn't end on Labor Day. The late September through early October period is my favorite time to visit the lake. Right now the air temperature pushes into the high 90s (F) most days. That's not a problem when you are boating and playing in the water, but it feels mighty hot when you are camping and hiking. In late September the air temperature will max out in the mid or high 80s – plenty warm but not oppressively hot, and the water will still be delightful.
Right now the lake is busy – and it will be a zoo on Labor Day. As that holiday ends, most visitors go home and the lake settles into a relaxed mode where it is easy to get a boat rental, get away from the crowds and enjoy the lake in relative solitude.

Fall Activities
Boating/Sight Seeing – Lake Powell never freezes and so it is possible to boat year-round. It is great fun to just cruise the lake, taking in the scenery and exploring the lake's multitude of side canyons. The lake cuts through the heart of southern Utah's red rock country, exposing scenery typical of that area. In many spots you boat below sheer sandstone walls towering 1000 feet above the lake, with sandy beaches extending down into the water.
Rainbow Bridge National Monument – This rainbow frozen in stone is the largest natural bridge in the world, and is the number one boating destination on Lake Powell. You can boat to within a short distance of the bridge and then hike right up under it. The bridge is about half-way between Wahweap and Bullfrog marinas. Tour boats take visitors to the bridge from both marinas.
Water Sports – September is a great time for water skiing, wakeboarding and riding pull-toys at the lake. The water is warm, the air is warm and there are plenty of open bays and narrow canyons where you can get off by yourself and play. At Powell, the water sport season begins in May and extends into October. If you wear wet suites, you can push the season and enjoy playing in the water earlier and later in the year.
Fishing – Lake Powell has long been a popular fishing destination, offering good action for striped bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, catfish and sunfish. Fishing is on an upswing, the size and quality of the fish is improving year after year. Some of the best striped bass fishing of the season takes place in August and September. Smallmouth and largemouth bass action becomes very good in October, as the water starts to cool. Fishing slows during the coldest part of winter and then picks up rapidly in spring.
Hiking – Many classic open desert and slot canyon trails are found in the Lake Powell area. Some are located close to the lake and you can easily drive to trailheads. For others, you boat to the end of a remote canyon and then start hiking. You can also enjoy leisurely strolls from the marinas and camping areas. Fall is perhaps the best season of the year to hike in this area because the weather is normally mild and dry.
If you enjoy boating, water sports, camping, hiking and fishing, Lake Powell is paradise during the fall. I just got back and I'm ready to go again.
