Celebrate the American West
If you are interested in authentic Old West adventure, you won't want to miss the Celebrating the West Festival, which will be held Aug 19-20 at the American West Heritage Center, located in Wellsville, UT (just outside of Logan). The festival offers:
- Gunfighters
- Mountain men
- Native Americans
- Pioneers
- A 1911 steam locomotive
- Hands-on activities
- Music, food and fun
The American West Heritage Center is popular attraction in the Logan area. Its mission is to keep history alive and it offers living history events year-round.
Logan Recreation
Logan also offers many other attractions and it is a great destination for a summer-get-a-way. It's high mountain valley setting means temperatures are always 5-10 degrees cooler than Salt Lake City. It is a center for outdoor recreation offering excellent opportunities for camping, boating, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, auto touring and other activities.
Logan Canyon National Scenic Byway is beautiful during the summer and spectacular during fall, when leaves begin to turn colors. The byway leads to Bear Lake, which is one of the most popular water recreation spots in the Mountain West. The lake is a turquoise gem, a very popular place to boat, ski, wakeboard, fish and camp.
Bear Lake Outdoor Heritage Days
As summer comes to an end, Garden City hosts a fun event called the Bear Lake Outdoor Heritage Days, held the Friday-Saturday following Labor Day (Sept 9-10, 2011). Many people dress in period costumes. Activities include:
- Parade
- Dutch oven dinner
- Vendors
- Talent show
- Quest hunt
The event will end with a concert by the Saddle Strings Western band, and a raffle drawing for merchandise including firearms.
The Logan/Bear Lake destination is a great choice for an end-of-summer getaway.
Great Basin National Park
Some of America's most popular national parks are clustered together in what has come to be called the Grand Circle. Parks like Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon are located in close proximity and can easily be visited during a single vacation.
Also in this area you will find wonderful attractions that are not as widely known, including Great Basin National Park. Great Basin is in the middle of nowhere and so many people overlook. Other people are attracted to the park because of its more remote location, away from the crowds and bustle of popular tourist centers.
Great Basin National Park offers three key attractions:
The caves are beautiful, full of stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, flowstone and popcorn. The caverns contain over 300 shield formations, which are rare in other caves. Cave tours are offered year-round.
Wheeler Peak is a massive mountain with a summit elevation of 13,063 feet. It is the highest point in the Great Basin, and the second highest peak in the state of Nevada. It is a lush oasis rising above the parched valley floor. It offers excellent campgrounds and hiking trails. The hike to the summit is not particular long or difficult, but is exhilarating, offering views that seem to extend forever.
Some of the oldest living things on earth are found in Great Basin National Park. They are the ancient bristlecone pines, amazing, gnarled, broken trees that grow in harsh conditions on exposed slopes. Some are thought to be over 5,000 years old.
Because Great Basin is in the middle of nowhere, it offers dark skies that are ideal for star gazing. The park offers star parties and other activities, and claims the best visibility of the Milky Way to be found anywhere within the continental United States.
There are also many other attractions and activities available at Great Basin National Park. I've enjoyed seeking out some of the park's little-known archaeological sites, including sites with great ancient rock art.
The park is located along the Utah/Nevada border, near the town of Baker, NV. Primary access is via US Hwy 50, which is often called the "Loneliest road in America." In this area you need to be prepared to travel many miles between towns and services. Always carry water, food and emergency gear.
Distances
- 197 miles - St George UT to Great Basin National Park
- 254 miles - Salt Lake to Great Basin National Park
- 315 miles - Las Vegas to Great Basin National Park
St George UT is a key hub for visitors on national park trips. Great Basin, Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon can easily be reached from that community.
In St George, we recommend staying at Red Mountain Resort. It is a world-class adventure retreat offering extraordinary accommodations, healthy meals, a fabulous spa and amazing adventure activities.
