Park City Area Golf
By Joel Zuckerman, The Vagabond Golfer
The single most popular golf course in the state of Utah, in terms of number of rounds played, is the Park City Golf Course. Not hard to understand, considering how lively this classic ski town remains in the incredibly beautiful summer months. It also might have something to do with the fact that this scenic, challenging and modestly priced municipal facility is practically the only game in town for the visiting golfer.
This hasn't always been the case. When it first opened several decades ago, the nearby Jack Nicklaus-designed Park Meadows Golf Course was public-access, but it's been a private club now for many years. And continuing that same theme, in the last decade Park City has quietly become perhaps the most alluring private golf destination in the Intermountain West. Fabulous high-end golf-centered real estate destinations have been proliferating. For those with the requisite dollars and desire, there is nowhere in the Rockies that offers the same array of quality choices.
Promontory has just opened its second golf course, another Jack Nicklaus design called Painted Valley. While this newcomer is strictly private, visitors can rejoice in the fact that Promontory's original course, the only course in Utah created by the legendary Pete Dye, accepts some limited outside play throughout the summer months.
Not so at ultra-posh Glenwild, which features a dazzling Tom Fazio design, considered the finest course in the entire state and available only for privileged members and their lucky guests. Unfortunately, the same scenario is in place at Tuhaye, the newest development in this illustrious trio. Their course, with unforgettable views of Deer Valley ski resort, was designed by two-time Major champion and part-time local resident Mark O'Meara.
More private enclaves are in the works. Jack Nicklaus is coming to town again, with a development called Red Ledges.
So what other options exist for the daily-fee player, the person who doesn't have a spare million for the mountain house? There's long been talk about a resort course at The Canyons Ski Resort, though those plans have been in a holding pattern for several years.
The best bet is to stray from the city limits just a short ways, for truly fun, affordable golf. Just west of Park City, down I-80 towards Salt Lake City, is Mountain Dell, 36 holes of public-access golf. And heading east on Highway 40, the town of Heber offers no less than five separate golf options (2 at Wasatch Mountain, 2 more at Soldier Hollow and 1 at The Homestead).
In addition to the ever-popular Park City Golf Course, there are more than a half-dozen options within a 20 or 30 minute drive. These are the visiting golfer's best bets. And don't be surprised if, after sampling some of this delightful terrain, enjoying the crisp summer golf weather and the length advantages off the tee due to the higher elevation, one doesn't begin scrimping and saving for a mountain golf home of his/her own.
