| Coyote Buttes South Length: Variable Difficulty: Strenuous Description: This area is similar to the more famous Coyote Buttes North (location of The Wave), but is more remote and more delicate. It contains the same slickrock striped and splashed with a multitude of colors. In addition, it offers thin fins and fragile arches. As you hike, be careful not to step on the fins because they will break. There are no established trails here. Rather, you simply explore the slickrock. You see a cluster of colorful domes and you hike over to investigate. You wander through twisting trenches and caverns. This area is reserved for day hiking. Some camping spots can be found near trailheads but no camping is allowed within the Coyote Buttes Special Management Area. Hikers need to obtain permits in advance. Only 20 hikers are allowed access per day. Get permit information here: https://www.blm.gov/az/asfo/paria/coyote_buttes/index.htm You need to carry a good topo map. Stop by the Paria Ranger Station or the Kanab Field Office for maps, road conditions and navigation advice. Lone Tree Access Point This is the most accessible point from which you can hike into the Coyote Buttes South area. A rough road continues east, to more remote access points, but high clearance four wheel drive is needed to reach them. Cottonwood Teepees Area This area is a popular destination for hikers. Scenery is magnificent in all directions. |
