It is approximately 60 miles south of Arches National Park, and is the Southern Gateway to Canyonlands National Park.

The location of Monticello was settled in July 1887 by pioneers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Monticello, named in honor of Thomas Jefferson’s estate, became the county seat in 1895 and was incorporated as a city in 1910.

Monticello is located at the base of the Abajo Mountains, or the Blue Mountains, which are part of the Manti-La Sal National Forest. The elevation of Monticello is 7,069 feet (2,155 m).
