Rio Tinto Kennecott Visitor Experience
Learn about the history of this amazing mine and see firsthand the gigantic scale of its operation, vehicles and artifacts. Discover how ore gets refined to become copper — an essential element in today’s technology. The Visitor Experience is dedicated to educating the public about the importance mining plays in modern life, safe mining practices and responsible environmental stewardship.
The Visitor Experience starts a the Lark visitor parking area. After check-in, visitors are shuttled up to the Bingham Canyon Mine overlook to see the spectacular mine and exhibits.
Reservations
Tours are offered from April to October. (Virtual tours are available online.) Reservations are recommended to guarantee your spot on the tour. Walk-up ticket purchases are available at the Bingham Canyon Lions Gift Shop. You'll need a credit card, cash is not accepted.
Tickets: Adults, $6; children age 5 and under are free
Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Visitors are encouraged to bring their own drinking water, but you may purchase soda from the vending machines. Food is not currently available at the Visitor Experience.
Group Reservations
Groups larger than 18 people must contact Customer Service through email or at (801) 204-2007 a minimum of 10 days prior to the visit. Special shuttle access to the Bingham Canyon Mine overlook is required and must be scheduled in advance. Tour companies must also schedule in advance. Due to safety regulations, tour groups will need to use Kennecott provided shuttles.
Gift Shop
Bingham Canyon Lions Gift Shop, located in the Lark visitor parking area, sells an assortment of items. From copper jewelry and trinkets to educational excavation kits, visitors of all ages are sure to find something special to take home with them. While there is a vending machine available with drinks, food is not available for purchase.
Safety Policies
Kennecott is committed to protecting the health and safety of all employees and visitors. All safety rules and policies must be followed. If you or anyone in your party is not following these rules or obeying posted signage, you will be escorted off-site. Additional safety messaging will be provided on the shuttle to the Bingham Canyon Mine overlook.
Minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. You must use the Kennecott provided shuttles. Children and adults must wear a seat belt while on the shuttle; car/booster seats are not required, and infants may be held in arms during travel. Stay inside the designated visitor area (fenced or otherwise) at all times. Use of drugs, alcohol or smoking/vaping is strictly prohibited. Firearms, knives and other weapons are prohibited on all Kennecott property.
Unauthorized use of drones or professional photography is prohibited on all Kennecott property. Bring water to carry with you during your visit; beverage vending machines are available near the gift shop, but no food service. Sunscreen and hats are recommended.
ADA accessibility and trained service dogs
Upon request, shuttles equipped with two ADA compliant seats are available. These shuttles can be requested during the reservation process. The Bingham Canyon Mine overlook is also ADA accessible. Only trained service dogs are allowed on the Visitor Experience. A trained service dog is defined as a dog who has received training to assist those who are blind or have low vision, deafness or hard of hearing, diabetes, seizures, mobility limitations or other needs. Emotional support or psychiatric service animals are not allowed on the Visitor Experience at this time.
