San Rafael Swell ATV Trails

The region includes popular off-road vehicle routes that climb high mountains, descend steep canyons, cross rugged desert and roll over extensive sand dunes. The famous Arapeen Trail System runs along the tops of mountain on the western edge of San Rafael Country.

SAN RAFAEL AREA TRAILS

The famous Arapeen Trail System runs along the tops of mountain on the western edge of San Rafael Country. It includes a large network of interconnecting trails. Some follow Skyline Drive, on the top of the Wasatch Plateau, while others run up and down adjacent canyons.

You can get onto the Arapeen Trail from Ferron and Huntington canyons and from the Joes Valley area. Joes Valley Reservoir is a key hub - several excellent trails converge there.

To the east, ATV trails criss cross many portions of the San Rafael Swell. Fun trails run out to The Wedge Overlook (Little Grand Canyon), down Buckhorn Draw and across Cedar Mountain.

Further south, very popular trails extend from Temple Mountain into Head of Sinbad Country, in The Swell south of I-70.

These routes follow graded roads in some spots. More commonly, they follow rough old jeep roads into scenic, remote and rugged backcountry.

Just southeast of the town of Green River, the White Wash Sand Dunes area has become a very popular place to ride ATVs and dirt bikes. These dunes rank with the best in Utah. There are no services or facilities, and no drinking water, but primitive camping is allowed in the area.

To reach the White Wash Dunes, take Exit 75 along I-70 and drive south following rough country roads.

In addition to the dunes, most backcountry roads in the White Wash area are open to ATVs. You can ride to Crystal Geyser, the Green River and other points of interest.

San Rafael Country includes diverse landscape and so the trails vary widely in difficulty. Between the sand dunes, desert canyons and forested mountains, the area offers something for every rider.
